My association with dogs to this day dates back to 1984 when I purchased my first black-and-tan working and show Dobermanns in Johannesburg. Over the years, I achieved great success in the breed competition ring.

Since meeting friends with Black Mastiffs, I have grown fond of them and am now completely sold on the breed. In my observation, they make excellent family protection dogs with a strong prey drive. My newly acquired black male, Titan, is loyal to the core, always upbeat, and greets everyone with vigorous tail wags. However, this is not a breed for those with a weak disposition—due to their size and immense strength, they require firm training.

I have since reserved a second Mastiff, a female this time, who will be joining us in the future.

Living on a farm, Black Mastiffs are the perfect family companions for us. However, my male can be quite possessive of my attention and does not always like to share it with other dogs. If not managed correctly, this can lead to issues.

I highly recommend the breed and the South African Black Mastiff Association (SABMA) to anyone looking to own such a dog and be part of a great club with a community that truly has the breed’s best interests at heart.

We are the proud mom and dad of two wonderful South African Black Mastiffs.

Our eldest is now nine and a half years old, and our young male will turn three in September. I will never get another breed of large dog again—these dogs are simply superbly bred. They have the most beautiful temperament and no health problems.

We consider ourselves their mother and father because, to us, they are not just dogs; they are our children. They are raised with discipline and lots of love.

It's wonderful to see how our old man teaches the youngster the things he learned as a puppy. It’s amazing how gentle and protective they are, especially with my Yorkies and small children. My Yorkies can’t wait for mealtime so they can eat together, and big brother Jax plays so gently with them.

We no longer have small children in the house, so it was heartwarming to see how Jax interacted with my friend’s young children. Even though he wasn’t used to being around kids, his gentle nature immediately came through—he walked everywhere with them, watched over them, and was incredibly careful.

Since moving to a farm, Jax has instinctively started chasing and herding the cattle, even though no one taught him—especially since we don’t have cattle ourselves. He keeps the bulls away if they come too close to the house and ensures that any calves that wander off are guided back to the camp. He is firm with them but never bites.

If a stranger poses a threat, I know without a doubt that my dogs would not hesitate for a moment to protect us with their lives.

We fully understand that raising a well-balanced dog is not only the breeder’s responsibility but also depends on how the dog is raised—with an abundance of love and a firm hand.

We will definitely invest in a South African Black Mastiff again because it is, without a doubt, the number one Boer.
